We are Rowing BC's Lower Mainland Para Centre of Excellence

As part of developing inclusive rowing programs across the province, and to support Rowing Canada Aviron’s Next Gen Rowing Hubs, Rowing BC has partnered with two leading rowing clubs in the province to create Para Centres of Excellence. The first centre to open was Gorge Narrows Rowing Club in Victoria, opened May 26, 2018. The Delta Deas Rowing Club was launched as the Lower Mainland's centre of excellence on June 16, 2018.

These Para Rowing Centres provide a development pathway for para rowing athletes with Next Generation potential. Supported by Rowing BC, the two centres offer para athletes individualized coaching and paralympic-level equipment. The centres also cater to grass-roots rowing for para athletes interested in general fitness.

Para Rowing provides athletes with a physical, sensory or intellectual impairment the opportunity to be active on the water, get involved in a fun and friendly club environment, and participate in a variety of competitions. Para rowing is suitable for a wide range of disabilities, including (but not limited to) paraplegia, autism, visual impairment, blindness, cerebral palsy, amputee, intellectual impairment, spina bifida, Downs syndrome, and hearing impairment. Delta Deas Rowing Club conducts a Para Rowing Program on the sheltered waters of Deas Slough at Deas Island Park. The equipment used is essentially the same as for able-bodied rowers, with adaptations to the equipment made as required.

Why should I row?

The ergonomics of rowing, in which the human body is guided through correct and symmetrical movement patterns by the equipment involved, oars and shell, can allow individuals to maintain a high level of muscular and cardiovascular output. This is particularly relevant where issues of coordination or spasticity may prevent an adequate level of exertion being achieved in many other sporting activities. Rowing is a unique activity in its ability to be adapted to a wide range of disability degrees and types and to allow both muscular strengthening and improved cardiovascular fitness.

How do I start?

We will typically arrange an initial meeting to learn more about you and assess your requirements. As in all rowing programs, spaces are limited by the size of our fleet. Contact us to find out more at 604-946-3074 or email us at info@deltadeas.com.
