Lead Coach – Junior Program
(with Masters Coaching Responsibilities)
Hours: 25–30 hours per week
Reports To: Head Coach
Position Summary
The Lead Coach – Junior Programs is responsible for the development, delivery, administration, and growth of DDRC's Junior rowing program while supporting the overall coaching needs of the club. Working under the direction of the Head Coach, this position serves as the primary coach for the Junior program and also coaches approximately 2–3 Masters practices per week, as assigned.
In addition to coaching responsibilities, this role supports athlete recruitment, retention, program administration, community outreach, grant development, and coach mentorship.
Key Responsibilities
Coaching & Athlete Development
Lead Junior training sessions, camps, and regatta preparation.
Coach approximately 2–3 Masters practices per week as assigned.
Develop seasonal training plans and athlete development pathways.
Conduct athlete goal-setting and regular progress check-ins.
Support athlete progression from Learn-to-Row through competitive programs.
Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive training environment.
Work collaboratively with the Head Coach to ensure consistency across club programming.
Program Operations
Coordinate Junior registrations and athlete onboarding.
Manage parent communications.
Coordinate regatta entries, travel logistics, accommodations, and ferry bookings.
Assist with equipment management, trailer preparation, and boat allocations.
Coordinate Learn-to-Row and novice programming.
Athlete Experience & Retention
Organize team-building activities and club events.
Coordinate guest speakers and educational opportunities.
Support athlete leadership development.
Facilitate the successful integration of new athletes into the program.
Program Growth & Community Engagement
Lead school outreach initiatives.
Develop recruitment strategies to grow Junior participation.
Build relationships with local schools and community partners.
Support fundraising initiatives.
Research and prepare grant applications.
Assist with sponsorship and partnership development.
Promote club programs through community engagement and special events.
Coach Development
Mentor assistant coaches and coaches-in-training.
Support completion of NCCP coaching pathways.
Provide regular feedback and development opportunities.
Assist the Head Coach with onboarding and evaluating Junior coaching staff.
Qualifications
Coaching experience in recreational and/or competitive rowing.
Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
Experience planning and delivering athlete development programs.
Technical knowledge of rowing equipment, rigging, and small motors.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel to regattas.
Required Certifications (or willingness to obtain before start date)
RCA LTR or RCA Coach Certification
CPR-C & Standard First Aid
Pleasure Craft Operator Card
Police Information Check
Assets
Para-rowing training
Grant writing or fundraising experience
Experience working with youth athletes and volunteers
Performance Incentives
In addition to the base salary of $38,500-42,000 (based on qualifications and experience), DDRC offers the opportunity to earn performance-based bonuses tied to club growth and program development. Incentives may include:
Bonuses for achieving Junior program enrollment targets.
Bonuses for securing new corporate team-building or corporate rowing events.
Performance incentives for successfully securing grants and external funding.
Additional incentives may be established annually based on club priorities.
Performance targets and bonus amounts will be outlined as part of the employment agreement.
